1. In my line of work we have a lot of old customers. I check prescriptions for people in their 90s, and even over 100, and always marvel at what they must have seen, how much things must have changed in their lifetimes. The other day we had an old man in the shop, and he told us the following story, which I started to believe but then by the end knew it was a joke, but bless them our old customers are funny! (Makes up for the grumpy, cantankerous and rude ones!).
Years ago in the 1930s so an old customer tells me, there was a little boy who got taken on a tram locally (before buses were a-la-mode), with a towel wrapped around his head. All the people on the tram looked at the boy and muttered amongst themselves as to what the reason behind it could be.
The mother explained, to silence all the muttering, that her son had managed to get a bowl stuck on his head, hence the towel.
The old customer never knew if the little boy managed to get help at the hospital to get the bowl off, but, he said, "wouldn't it be funny if it was still stuck on his head now. He'd be on the gerihatrick ward!".
2. I spent the other weekend with a friend from university and her young family. I was amazed and inspired about how when a 3-year-old sets their mind to something, nothing stops them and they have such focus! After picking up one feather, he had to find more, and eventually ended up with over 10 (quite what he's going to do with them now I'm not sure, I imagine Mummy and Daddy will help the majority of them find their way to the bin). Daddy even helped by pointing out the feathers and picking some up and sticking them at reaching height, but that wasn't even necessary, he was finding them all on his own!
3. We got to go to a play area as well, the 7 month old, she got to go on a swing, and the 3 year old, well he went on everything! And I got told I had to join in most of it as well, which was amazing fun ;).
4. We also went to an "Apple Day". There were many apple-themed activities, and the three-year-old was able to do some printing with paint and a cut apple, and there was a poem to find, where words were hidden behind numbered doors - great fun was had finding all the words for that!
5. Children copy - everything! As evidenced with much hilarity in the following happenings! 3-year-old and I were having a lovely time playing with windmill-type toy in sandpit, pouring sand in the top to make it turn around. 7-month-old is sat on her mat watching, having a good time and babbling to herself. 3-year-old turns around and says "is that so Laura?" - I had to smile, and laugh a lot inside - so funny to hear it coming out of a 3-year-old - he's obviously picked it up from Mummy and Daddy!
6. It was very late September, and the weather stayed lovely, I was evening walking about in a t-shirt and didn't feel too cold, the sun was shining, and we were able to enjoy the lovely autumn days - I was very thankful for that.
7. While walking along on the lovely autumn day, we passed some pine trees, and it reminded me how much I love the smell of pine! My Mum's house has pine trees, and I grew up with the smell in the front garden and at the top of the back garden, so I suppose it reminded me of being small myself.
8. I am very thankful for service stations, as on the way back from my friend's I thought I was going to almost fall asleep at the wheel at one point, so I pulled over at the next services and had a break to wake myself up a bit, I did not fancy causing an accident on the M25. I am very grateful that after this I got home safely!
9. I went to the cinema with a school friend to see Rush - I have followed F1 for a while, but Lauda/Hunt happened about 5 years before I was born, and I didn't know anything about it all, but it was an amazing film, even if you don't like racing! I'm going to be getting the DVD when it comes out. We had dinner before, and my friend had discount vouchers for both, so cheap night out! Get in!
10. I was very very pleased with my lovely baptism present from Considerer, I know it's meant to go outside, but it has pride of place on my bookcase where I can look at it everyday and be reminded of its truth:
See you next weekend (I won't leave it so long next time, promise). Do comment, and hop over to Considerings and share your 10 things.
Yes, I took my time but got there, will try and be good every week now! I wish the weather had stayed as well, definitely autumn now!
ReplyDelete'ello* good to hear your listation. the energy and 'open-ended' curiosity of children is pretty impressive... but then so much is new for them. Someone once wrote that 'were we only able to see the day as does a 5 year old, we would be less prone to dissatisfaction with our lives'
ReplyDelete*no, I am not from England, that is the extent of my language/accent skills
Ha ha, love your 'ello, 'ello 'ello 'ello is stereotypical opening from a policeman! Love the quote, oh to be a 5-year-old again!
DeleteYou have such a lovely perspective on things. Loved the gerihatrick story. As I'm a Yank, I'm afraid the "that's so Laura" comment is lost on me. Or, it's simply because I'm stupid. Either way, I still loved your post. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks Rich. "Is that so" - standard response when you don't know what someone is on about, OR totally disagree. In this case, the first one, 7-months-old babbling still incomprehensible so her parents use it in their side of the conversation with her, 3-year-old was copying what he'd heard! Bless them.
DeleteSounds like you had a lovely time with your friends and their children! Kids do say such funny things! (We'll excuse Rich for not "getting it" and just let him think it's an English thing, mmkay?) I love the smell of pine trees, too. Fall is the BEST time of year, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI do like AUMTUMN (England here, you see) as long as I'm wrapped up and it's DRY, hate being wet! And out of the mouths of babes as they say, I love it!
DeleteI love fall/autumn, too! It's funny how well children pick up phrases and mannerisms, isn't it? I used to chuckle when my little ones would say, "Actually, . . ."
ReplyDeleteYes they really do copy everything, you have to be so careful what you say around them!
